The strange joyfulness of Bonhoeffer’s prison letters

  • St Albans Cathedral St Albans, England United Kingdom (map)

It has been eighty years since the martyrdom of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, yet his legacy continues to resonate. In this lecture, we will revisit the letters he wrote to friends and family from his cell in Tegel Prison, where he spent his final years. Among the many themes woven into his writings, one stands out as both surprising and strange: joy. We will explore how, in the midst of the abject conditions of live in jail, joy became central to Bonhoeffer’s prison experience, and consider what this might reveal for living the Christian life today.

Speaker: Dr Ashley Cocksworth, University of Roehampton
